FEN chess position analysis.
Use FEN notation to load and analyze a custom chess position. Understand the six FEN fields and avoid common setup mistakes.
How do I analyze a FEN position?
Open the position importer, choose FEN, paste all six fields, and confirm the side to move and castling rights before running engine analysis.
What a FEN contains
A complete FEN describes piece placement, the side to move, castling rights, a possible en passant square, the halfmove clock, and the move number. All six fields matter when reproducing a position accurately.
Check the position before analysis
Confirm that both kings exist, the correct player is to move, and castling or en passant rights match the real game. A legal-looking board can still produce the wrong analysis when its metadata is wrong.
Explore more than one line
The top engine move is a starting point. Play the opponent’s strongest response, branch into the move you considered, and compare why the evaluation changes.
Practice it on the board
Test your move first, then use Stockfish to compare the strongest continuation.
